Presentation:

The Institute for Training and Research in Demographics, abbreviated IFORD, is an Intergovernmental Organization bringing together 22 French-speaking African and Indian Ocean States. IFORD was founded in 1971 following an agreement reached on November 9 of the same year between the Government of Cameroon and the United Nations. The institute opened its doors in November 1972 with three essential missions, namely:

1. The training of high-level executives in Population Sciences
2. The conduct of research work and the publication of their results and
3. Technical support to Member States and partners.

The headquarters of IFORD is located in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Its teaching premises are located on the campus of the University of Yaoundé 1 in Ngoa Ekelle. However, IFORD is attached to the University of Yaoundé 2.

In more than 50 years of existence, IFORD has trained more than 1,200 African demographers and has established itself as a major player in research in the field of "Population and Development" on the continent.

IFORD is a Center of Excellence and reference in Population and Development Sciences in Africa.

For 50 years of existence, IFORD has also provided its member states and partners with its expertise in the collection, processing and analysis of demographic and social data, as well as in the definition and implementation of population policies.

Missions

Training of high-level executives in Population Sciences

The professional training of demographers at IFORD aims to strengthen the capacities and skills of African executives and administrations in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of population and development programs and projects and national and sectoral strategic frameworks for development and growth.

At the end of their course, graduates are able to:

• organize data collection operations, from design to dissemination of results;
• integrate demographic factors into development policies;
• develop, manage and evaluate population programs;
• advise public authorities in the definition and implementation of population policies;
• integrate population variables into strategic frameworks for the fight against poverty;
• conduct research in population and development, etc.

Conducting research and publishing its results

All IFORD professors carry out research activities, most often in partnership with other higher education institutions and research centers. The main research areas at IFORD are:

• Population, Environment, Development;
• Measurement and analysis of poverty;
• Sexual and reproductive health;
• Gender, societies and demographic behaviors;
• Migrations and Development. Most of the research work carried out at IFORD is published in its institutional publications (Cahiers, Dossiers, Annales, Bulletins). The IFORD biannual information bulletin (IFORD-Infos) promotes effective dissemination of information on the activities carried out and future prospects.

Recent publications by IFORD researchers include articles and books dealing with a wide variety of subjects, such as: urbanization and family structures of households, discontinuity of obstetric care or excess mortality of young girls.

Technical support to Member States and partners

To meet growing demand from Member States and partners, IFORD is called upon to develop its technical assistance and expertise provision activities.
