The Probatoire is an examination specific to the French-speaking education sub-system in Cameroon. It does not exist in the Anglophone sub-system.

Pupils sit the Probatoire exam in Première class. Only success in this exam gives access to the Terminale class. Whatever marks a student may achieve throughout the school year, admission to the Terminale class depends on passing the Probatoire.

For generations, the Probatoire exam has been seen by some as a barrier to further study. Some call it a sieve because of the success rate, which has often been very low.

Every year, thousands of Cameroonian candidates take the baccalauréat in Chad to avoid the dreaded Probatoire exam. In the education system of this neighbouring country of Cameroon, the Probatoire does not exist.
