The gendarme is a member of the military public security forces in Cameroon. They carry out administrative, judicial and military policing duties.
As far as administrative policing is concerned, the gendarme's mission is to guarantee safety, tranquillity and the maintenance of public order.
As part of their judicial policing duties, gendarmes are responsible for executing court orders and rulings, recording breaches of criminal law, gathering evidence, tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
As part of their military police duties, gendarmes are responsible for general military policing for preventive purposes and military judicial policing for repressive purposes.
The gendarme is also responsible for carrying out the duties assigned to various ministerial departments, such as economic policing (control of patents, prices, etc.), customs offences, road traffic control, air traffic control, aerodromes and maritime navigation.
In peacetime, the gendarme collaborates with the defence forces on intelligence matters and is involved in the implementation of mobilisation measures. In wartime, he/she participates in the internal defence of the territory.
